Jacob's stew : Lamb and black eyed bean stew

Jacob's stew

( My apologies for this repost. The original was accidentally deleted )

This is an account of two brothers, one who loved domestic life and the other, the outdoors. The story revolved about a pot of delicious, red bean stew and how the older brother, who preferred to live for the moment, lost the most important thing in his life.

The moral of the story : Teach the kids to share their food. Here goes :

Genesis 25 : 29-34, Good News Bible :

One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry and said to Jacob, I'm starving; give me some of that red stuff.  Jacob answered, I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son.

Esau said, All right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do me?
Jacob answered, First make a vow that you will give me your rights.

Esau made the vow and gave his rights to Jacob.  Then Jacob gave him some bread and some of the soup. He ate and drank and then got up and left. That was all Esau cared about his rights as the first-born son.

This story captivated my 4 year old girl so much. One day, after reading the Bible, she asked that I cook this. It was with much difficulty, since the recipe was not recorded in the Bible. The only clue  was the following picture and how it should look.

It's a challenge to be a mum sometimes.

Ingredients :

500g lamb,  cubed
2 carrots, cubed
1 onion, cubed
2 cups black eyed beans, soaked overnight ( for accurate reproduction of the story, use lentils instead. Here, black eyed bean was all I have )
3 bay leaves
1 cup tomato puree
Dash of pepper
2 cups stock or boiling water

In a slow cooker, combine the above ingredients and cook on high, for about 6 hours, until the sauce is reduced. Season with sea salt before serving.

Serve with bread.

  1. I never took much time to think about what a "mess of pottage" actually was.
Fun story now I want to make some.

    1. Do try it! Since there's not much specifics mentioned in the Book, any deviation from the list of ingredients should do just alright.
